Ignatius of Loyola, born on August 7, 1491, was a Spanish priest and a spiritual writer of the Catholic Church. As a member of the Society of Jesus he is known as "Ignatius" from the Latin word meaning "he who is called." Ignatius of Loyola was one of the key figures in the Counter-Reformation movement, which sought to reform the Church from within. He created a distinctive method of spiritual exercises that emphasized participation in a community, thus instilling a spirit of community rather than individualism. He was beatified by Pope Paul VI on May 2, 1975.
